St. Peter’s Church,is Stop 12 on your map. From Broad Alley and the Old Rectory, you can reach it through the back entrance into the churchyard,which is opposite Broad Alley on Church Lane. The old churchyard is filled with headstones, some of which date back well over 300 years. St. Georgians and Bermudians of all walks of life are buried here. There are governors,professionals, ordinary townsfolk,pirates and, perhaps best-known, there’s the grave of Midshipman Richard Dale. Dale was an American seaman who was mortally wounded during a sea battle with the English in the War of 1812. He was 20 years old when he died in 1815. The monument you see here was erected by his parents in tribute to the people of St. George because their “tender sympathy prompted the kindest attentions to their son while living and honored him when dead.”
